Bengaluru — June 16, 2025: A female elephant and her calf lost their lives after being electrocuted at a coffee plantation in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The tragic incident took place late Saturday night when the two elephants, in search of food, came into contact with a snapped live wire at ABC estate near Guddabetta village in Sakleshpur taluk.
Forest officials believe the wire may have broken due to recent heavy rains. The local forest department has registered a formal complaint against the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), holding it accountable for the unattended live wire.
With this incident, Karnataka has now reported 13 elephant deaths in 2025, around half due to electrocution. Since 2021, the state has seen a total of 374 elephant deaths, 51 of which were caused by electrocution. Officials attribute the growing number of such incidents to elephants being forced out of forests due to increasing deforestation.
